1. At the top of the title, the VIN, year, make, model, etc. of the vehicle should be printed. There is also an inclusion to indicate how many liens, if any, are on the sale. If there are none, a zero (0) should appear here. Below this, the owner’s name and address should be printed.
2. On front of title, the “Release of Lien” section should only be filled in if there is a lienholder on the sale. If not, leave this blank and proceed to the next section.
3. On front of title, in the “Certificate of Title” section, the sale price and date (in written, not numerical form) must be recorded. The buyer’s name and address should be printed just below the sale date.
4. The next lines are for lienholders. If there are none, write “None” and proceed.
5. The odometer reading should be recorded in the provided space. If the reading is inaccurate, the appropriate checkbox should be ticked to indicate that the reading is not correct.
6. At the very bottom of the form, the buyer(s) and seller(s) must sign and print their names. New Jersey provides two spaces for buyers and two for sellers.
Helpful Tips
- New Mexico’s title looks very complicated upon first inspection, but it is actually one of the simplest state titles to fill out! Be sure to pay special attention to the instructions and which line you are on, as making mistakes will result in the document being voided.
- If you do make a mistake filling out this title, New Mexico has one of the cheaper duplicate costs for titles, coming in under $20. Your local DMV can provide you with a new copy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When do I cancel my insurance?
A. Only cancel your vehicle's insurance AFTER your vehicle has been picked up and you have notified the state that you’ve donated your vehicle. If your state requires notification, please be aware that you should never cancel your insurance prior to reporting to the state you are no longer in possession of the vehicle. This is a general rule for States/Motor Vehicle Departments that require Notification be submitted or license plates returned.
Q: Who is considerd the purchaser of my vehicle donation? Is it the nonprofit or charity?
A. The purchaser of your donated vehicle is NOT the nonprofit or charity. It will either be the vendor or Charitable Adult Rides & Services, the vehicle donation program provider and partner of your nonprofit of choice.
Q. What is State Notification?
A. State notification releases the vehicle donor from liability over the vehicle, including registration fees and from having to keep the vehicle insured, after the vehicle is picked up. State notification is a way for the state to create a record that the owner is no longer in possession of the vehicle. The steps needed to release your liability of a donated vehicle vary by state.
Q. Who is supposed to take care of the state notification process?
A. If state notification is required, only the donor and/or owner of the vehicle can complete this process. Please do not rely on the pick-up driver or vendor to report to the State/Motor Vehicle Department that you are no longer in possession of the vehicle.
