HOW TO HANDLE THE LICENSE PLATES WHEN YOU DONATE A CAR, TRUCK, SUV OR OTHER STANDARD VEHICLE IN CONNECTICUT
Please remove the license plates of your donated vehicle before the pick-up. Plates stay with owner. You can choose to terminate your registration and move the plates to another vehicle you own, or you can store the plates yourself and/or dispose of them.

There are three ways in Connecticut to notify the DMV that you have donated your car: online, by mail or in person. You can find more information and forms for each notification method below:
1. TO CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION AND PLATES ONLINE:
*PREFERRED METHOD* If possible, we highly recommend completing forms online instead of by mail, so you may easily save and print out a copy for your records that includes a date/timestamp.
- Please click button below to access the Connecticut DMV Portal.
- Choose 'Cancel Your Registration - Individual'.
- Complete the Cancel Registration and Plates Form. *Do not include middle name. *Do not include spaces nor dashes when filling out your plate number.
- Important: Print and keep the confirmation page as your receipt.
2. TO CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION AND PLATES IN PERSON:
- Click the button below to downnload, print and complete the Marker Plate Notice Form.
- Submit the completed form to your local field office. Click HERE to locate your local field office.
3. TO CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION AND PLATES BY MAIL:
- Click the button below to downnload, print and complete the Marker Plate Notice Form.
- Mail the completed Marker Plate Notice Form to:
