Typically, when there are no specific requirements listed, this means transfer of ownership occurs with the transfer of the title. We recommend keeping a copy of the transferred title for your personal records.
HOW TO HANDLE THE LICENSE PLATES WHEN YOU DONATE A CAR, TRUCK, SUV OR OTHER STANDARD VEHICLE IN INDIANA
Please remove the license plates of your donated vehicle before the pick-up. The Indiana BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles) does not require the license plates of sold or donated vehicles to be returned to the BMV. The license plates of sold or donated vehicles may be transferred to a different vehicle owned by that same person.
HOW TO TRANSFER A LICENSE PLATE AFTER YOU DONATE YOUR VEHICLE:
- Please note: There are specific license plates that may be transferred online: Passenger, Truck (11,000 pounds or less), Motorcycle, and In God We Trust. Please be advised that there may be specific scenarios where you cannot transfer online and must visit a branch to transfer your plate.
