Vehicle transfer notification is REQUIRED and must be completed after the vehicle pick-up date.

Notification of Sale, Trade-in, or Donation


There are 3 ways in Virginia to notify the DMV that you have donated your car: online, in person, or by phone. You can find more information and forms for each notification method below:


  1. TO NOTIFY THE DMV THAT YOU HAVE DONATED THE VEHICLE ONLINE:


    *PREFERRED METHOD* If possible, we highly recommend completing forms online instead of by mail, so you may easily save and print out a copy for your records that includes a date/timestamp. Also, when completed online, a receipt can be printed ensuring it's been received.

  3. TO NOTIFY THE DMV THAT YOU HAVE DONATED THE VEHICLE IN PERSON:


    Visit your local DMV Customer Service Center. Click HERE to locate your local DMV Customer Service Center.


  4. TO NOTIFY THE DMV THAT YOU HAVE DONATED THE VEHICLE BY PHONE:

LICENSE PLATES


Please remove the license plates.
If the plates are not transferred to another vehicle, you may return them to any DMV Customer Service Center for recycling, or you may destroy and dispose of them yourself.
